The Belt Railway Company of Chicago is currently accepting applications for Signalpersons or Trainees.  They will assist the Signal Maintainer in inspection, testing and maintenance of batteries to insure proper operation, inspection and testing of signal circuitry, replacing defective components, wiring, broken lenses or light bulbs, cleaning signal equipment including signs and lenses with cloths and solvents, lubricating moving parts on mechanical equipment, inspection, testing and maintenance of signal equipment such as grade crossing devices, power switches and switch air unit controllers, installing testing and maintaining retarder systems, performing a wide range of construction, installation, maintenance and repair activities requiring frequent use of hand tools, general labor duties as assigned.  Must be able to work in a safety-sensitive, construction-oriented environment.

Must have a HS diploma or GED.  Electrical or Electronics experience in the military or on the job required.  An associate degree in Electronics is a definite plus, but not required.  Computer literacy is also strongly preferred.  Must have experience working outdoors year round and be available to work 24/7.  Must be able to meet full-time employment requirement.  Experience in construction or cable installation a plus.  Class A CDL strongly preferred, or ability to obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire date.  Previous experience operating heavy machinery a plus.  Must have a valid driver’s license and own vehicle.  Must pass a physical, background check, and a post-offer drug test if offered a position.  Veterans are encouraged to apply.

The Belt Railway Company of Chicago is currently accepting resumes for a Resident Engineer.  The Engineering Department is responsible for planning and directing inspection, construction, maintenance and repair for Track Infrastructure, Signal/Electronic Equipment, and other Structures (bridges, buildings, miscellaneous facilities).  Previous experience working with track dynamics, track inspection, construction and maintenance operations preferred. The successful candidate for this position will effectively assist the Chief Engineer in oversight of Engineering Department projects.

Duties will include management of construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects including development of work scopes, designs, budgets and schedules; management of personnel, equipment, materials, contractors, and other resources; coordination with various interdepartmental personnel, municipal agencies, utility companies and contractors; participation in preconstruction, project status, and public involvement meetings; supervision of crews and/or contractors during construction; and evaluation of project billing and budgets.  Technical evaluation of various engineering design and construction projects to ensure that scopes of work proposed by State or Municipal Agencies, consultants, utilities and/or abutters are in conformance with railroad specifications and AREMA standards.

The position requires frequent coordination with local/state agencies and other outside parties as well as supervision of railroad personnel and contractors.


  • Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline; P.E. preferred
  • At least three (3) years of previous railroad engineering management experience

 A train service employee is responsible for the safe movement of freight trains and switching of cars in the yards.  Specific functions will include frequently climbing ladders to board standing cars, operating hand brakes, coupling air hoses between cars, operating track switches, inspecting cars and using hand and lantern signals, radio communications and remote control technology to control train movement.  This is not a typical 40-hour-a-week opportunity; the position consists of variable and irregular work hours with irregularly scheduled days off.  Train service employees work weekends and holidays on an “on call” basis, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.


 Get on and off stationary equipment; couple and uncouple air hose and electrical connections between cars; ride on moving cars by holding onto grab irons and standing on ladder steps; assist in moving replacement knuckle to location of broken knuckle; assist in removal and replacement of broken knuckle; assist in aligning of drawbars by using available equipment to lift, pull or push on the drawbar.
